What to Plant in June in Columbus

Here in Columbus, Ohio there are still plenty of vegetables that you can be planting in your garden in June. 

It’s a common misconception to believe that all of your garden planting needs to be done in mid May, after the threat of frost. However, the gardening season in Columbus, Ohio actually goes from early April all the way through to November.

Not only do we have a solid seven or more months of gardening, but we can also plant new things almost every single month within the season.

Here is a list of vegetables that you can plant in your garden during the month of June in Columbus

  1. Tomatoes

  2. Peppers

  3. Cucumber

  4. Okra

  5. Bush Beans

  6. Pole Beans

  7. Basil

  8. Zucchini

  9. Summer Squash

  10. Rosemary

All of these vegetables both prefer and thrive in the warmer temperatures, which is perfect for Midwest summers. 

Here are a few tips for planting these vegetables in June

Start with plants whenever possible

This will help to give you a good head start on growth, meaning you’ll be able to enjoy its harvests sooner and longer. Keep in mind, certain plants, like beans, prefer to be directly sowed by seed.

Choose varieties that are quick to mature

Fruiting veggies like tomatoes, squash, and cucumbers are available in many different varieties. Some varieties can take close to 90 days to mature, while others mature and produce faster. The longer they take to mature the higher your risk is to losing some of your crop to fall frost. Look for varieties that mature in around 70 days. 

Water well until the plant is established

Planting in the heat of summer can be tough on new plants. Give them plenty of water and love until they are well established in the garden.
